VIC: Winter Food and Clothes Outreach

Matt. 25:40 “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

On the 22nd of April, Maranatha church had a letterboxing programme. As we know that winter is around the corner we were requesting donations for those that face winter on the streets of Melbourne. Our purpose was to involve brothers and sisters and people who do not come to church in order to prepare winter packs. We had a list of things we wanted to get such as: socks, leggings, beanie, scarves, gloves (new and clean), 2 min noodles, fruit/nut/cereal bars, soup in a cup, dried snacks, candies, biscuits, wipes, tampons, pads, hand cream, and lip balm. The Collection day was going to be on the 06/05 from 10.30 am – 12.00pm. So, after we finished letterboxing we went to somebody’s house to prepare some “thank you” cards for people who would donate those things.

On the day of collection we had a few people coming and dropping off their donations, and it was very exciting to see the result of the previous letterboxing. After that, we had to sort out all donations into winter packs and get ready to go to the city.

Our distribution took place next to the Queen Victoria Market, a very known place. It started at 7.00pm. We set up a table, warmed up some soup, which was distributed with some slices of bread, and also handed out the winter packs which we hope will take off some of the winter bite.

It was a great experience and a blessing for everyone that participated, especially for the young people, who were very active and helpful. We learned that we need to improve some things in order to do the outreach more efficiently; and that means that we have in mind to do more of this kind of work because we feel that we need, as individuals and as a church, more of a practical religion.
