A Heart for East Timor

A Heart for East Timor

Martha Barat’s Birthday

“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35.

“We are in a world where hearts need human sympathy; and God has given us benevolence, that we may realize this need, and be kind and charitable to all with whom we come in contact.” Bible Echo, December 1, 1886.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon on the June 2, church friends and family gathered to celebrate Sister Martha’s birthday, but this year’s celebration was unlike any other. Sister Martha, known for her generous spirit, decided to turn her special day into an opportunity to support a cause close to her heart: the East Timor mission.

The event was held at Maranatha church, elegantly decorated to reflect both the joy of the occasion and the significance of the mission. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and excitement as guests arrived, ready to share in Sister Martha’s unique celebration.

Instead of traditional birthday gifts, Sister Martha had one simple request: contributions to aid the mission in Timor-Leste. Her invitation read, “Your presence is the best present, but if you wish to give more, please support the East Timor mission.” This selfless gesture set the tone for a memorable evening dedicated to making a difference.

The highlight of the event was a detailed presentation of the East Timor mission by Brother Luke Phillips, who has been deeply involved with the mission. He shared compelling stories and insights into the ongoing projects and the positive impact they have on the local community. Everyone learned about the mission’s efforts in education, Bible studies, healthcare, and community development, and they were all moved by the testimonies of those whose lives had been touched by the mission’s work.

The presentation was followed by a lively choir song. Sister Martha’s passion for the cause was evident, and her heartfelt words inspired many to contribute generously.

After the program, guests were treated to a delightful meal. The menu was thoughtfully organised by Sister Martha, and a few sisters lent a hand in the preparation of the meal. As they dined, guests shared stories, laughter, and a delightful time together.

By the end of the evening, the collective contributions exceeded expectations, reflecting the guests’ generosity and commitment to Sister Martha’s willingness to support the mission. The final amount was a little bit over AU$9,000, and we praise the Lord for touching the hearts of everyone who contributed. The funds raised will go a long way in supporting the mission’s projects and improving the lives of many in East Timor.

Sister Martha’s birthday celebration was a testament to the power of compassion and love. It highlighted how one person’s dedication can inspire many to come together for a greater good. As guests departed, they carried with them not only the joy of celebrating Sister Martha’s special day but also a renewed sense of purpose and a deeper connection to the mission in Timor-Leste.

Martha’s birthday was more than just a celebration; it was a call to action, a reminder that we can all play a part in making the world a better place. And in doing so, we honour the true Christian spirit of giving and the joy of helping others.

Happy Birthday, Sister Martha! Your generosity and vision have truly made this a birthday to remember. All glory and honour be to the Lord forever!
